VMware admins and users would benefit a lot from a VM-centric storage. vVols save IT organizations a lot of time, because: a. they don't need multiple datastores with different capabilities, b. svmotion are replaced with policy changes, ad vVols can be provisioned faster because the compatible datastores are easy to identify when choosing policies, c) cloning is handed over to the array, and d) troubleshooting is faster because if a VM is having a problem with its disks it is easy to get the array metrics from the VASA showing the status of individual vVols. With vVols and Pure Storage, disparate data services are stitched together into one easy to use fabric, with each VM directly connected to its own volumes with far better workload lifecycle management.

After a short introduction to HashiCorp Packer and a presentation of the insightful GitHub project packer-examples-for-vsphere.. the presentation with introduce the chaining machine principle and HCP Packer features. Chaining Machine Image Builds with Packer Packer isn’t just about creating a single image. It’s about creating layers of images, each built atop the last. This chaining process allows for maximum flexibility and efficiency. Imagine this: You start with a base OS image. Atop that, you add common tools and utilities, creating another image. Then, layer on your specialized applications or configurations. By chaining these builds, you can update any layer without redoing the entire stack. If there’s a security patch for the OS, update the base image and let the chain do the rest. This chaining mechanism minimizes redundant work, ensures up-to-date images, and offers a modular approach to image management. HCP Packer In the world of continuous integration and continuous deployment, the gap between creating machine images and deploying them remains a challenge. That’s where HCP Packer shines. Imagine a library where every book’s revision history, its current version, and its relation to other books are clearly detailed. HCP Packer is that library for your machine images: it manages the intricate web of metadata surrounding them. By centralizing this metadata, HCP Packer empowers: Developers - No more guessing if you’re building on the latest base image. HCP Packer provides clarity, ensuring that your applications are always built on the most up-to-date foundation. Security Teams - With a clear lineage of each image, security teams can track vulnerabilities, enforce policies, and ensure compliance throughout the image lifecycle. Operational Efficiency - Bridging the image creation and deployment gap means faster, more consistent deployments. Your teams work in sync, with a single source of truth. In essence, HCP Packer is a cornerstone for collaborative, efficient, and secure image management.
